Asian-Inspired Dinner

It was another one of those nights where we didn’t know what to make, but we had lots of common ingredients lying around.  Dinner ended up being veggie tofu stir fry, rice noodles in hot and sour soup, potstickers with kimchi on the side.  I would say it was a pretty successful night for improvisational [...]

Hoecakes

Hoe cakes are a traditional Southern cornmeal pancake that are supposed to have been so-named because they were originally cooked on the blade of a hoe over an open fire.  They go perfect with any Southern dish, or are a great quick and filling breakfast. The basis of hoecakes is corn meal.  Simply pour boiling [...]

Kimchi!

Kimchi is a spicy pickled cabbage used as a side dish or in Korean main dishes.  We have been making pickles and sauerkraut, so Kimchi wasn’t a far stretch. We used the WikiHow recipe.  It makes about 1 1/2 Quarts. 3 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon sea salt 6 cups water 2 lbs. Chinese (Napa) cabbage, [...]

Grandpa’s Crunchy Pickles

I am a do-it-yourselfer just like my Grandpa.  He makes and grows everything himself.  He couldn’t find a good pickle recipe where the veggies stayed crunchy because they are boiled until he came across this recipe. Stir sliced cucumbers, carrots, peppers and onions in 1 1/2 c. pickling salt and cover in water.  Let soak [...]

Sunday Morning Honey Butter Cinnamon Rolls

Beat 3/4 c. sugar, a pinch of salt and 3 eggs in a bowl.  Mix in 2 cups flour and slowly add more flour until the dough doesn’t stick when rolled in your hands.  Bake at 350 for 10 minutes or until golden brown.  Mix 1 tbs butter, 1 tbs honey, and a dash of [...]

Savory Apple and Dijon Mustard English Pork Pies

Pardon me for not being around lately, I just got back from my honeymoon in Spain.  I will give you plenty to chew on as far as food and drink, but tonight, we just wanted to eat English Pork Pies. We started with a cheap and fatty cut of bone-in pork roast.  It was cubed, [...]

Making Some Beer Brats

Ask the German kid to make a stereotypical meal.  Let’s have some beer brats. Boil a typical lager beer with a handful of onions, black pepper, and brats or hotdogs if you are feeling poor. Serve with the boiled onions and a hard mustard on a bun.  And perhaps some nutmeg and clove pickles, a [...]

Finally, a Hot Meal!

We finally took the time to make a nice homemade dinner. I made some “No-Knead Bread“. We fried up some Macedonian sausage with leeks and collard greens.  Topped with some La Preferida, it was the perfect amount of spice. And although somebody never gets people food, she whined all night from the delicious smell.

No-Knead Beer Bread Recipe

This beer bread is simple. It is 2 cups white flour, 1/2 cup wheat flour. Add a quarter teaspoon of yeast. Moisten it with the beer until it pulls back without tearing. I used about a half a can of beer. I like cheap beer, because it tends to give it a malty flavor. Beers [...]

Bacon Vodka

There is something to be said about odd combinations of food. Brownie Points Blog wrote a post about bacon vodka that came in a vodka tasting kit. “What to do with it you ask? You can give it away as a gift, use it in a Bloody Mary, Make a Bastardized Cloudy Martini (a real [...]
