  8. I sometimes do eggs in the microwave for speed, but they have a tendency to blow up on me. One time I put the egg in a coffee cup, and it boomed enough to eject much of the egg out of the cup and onto the bottom of the microwave. I made sure to take a picture of that one.

  62. Four was originally pitched by an ex-Minnesota hockey player. When I was a wine rep, we were in the test market and it caught on.

Four Maxed is the spinoff of the original Four (cherry flavored, 6% alcohol, energy drink chemicals, and wormwood).

I have seen it in Indiana, Minnesota, and Michigan. It depends on your beer/wine distributors and if they have contacted the company, so YMMV.

I might try this sometime, but I wouldn’t drink it more than once without having a non-diet version. I worry about it being diet because Diet Dr Pepper doesn’t taste very good at all. Plus I’m not so hot on consuming aspartame. If you like Diet Dr Pepper, more power to you, but to me I can tell the difference immediately. I also have some Dr Pepper made with cane sugar from Dublin Dr Pepper, which is an improvement over the high fructose corn syrup but spendy.

Quote from Wikipedia: In 1995, FDA Epidemiology Branch Chief Thomas Wilcox reported that aspartame complaints represented 75% of all reports of adverse reactions to substances in the food supply from 1981 to 1995. Look up “excitotoxin” if you need more details.

Anyway, the plants really, really seem to like that fishwater—I am concerned about germs though so I make sure not to get it on any leaves or, esp., fruits. I homebrew as well. I reuse their bottles and tops. Jim Koch encourages customers to homebrew to appreciate beer. It sells him more beer.

    @ Megan-

Blue Moon is one of the brands that I sell. Our warehouse had it for about 2 months. It isn’t doing as well as say, the Spring Ale, but it sold pretty well. It was a bit too earthy and spiced for me, but it was a unique market segment and a lot of people liked it a lot.

They are awesome. Water flows right through them, but because of their rough texture, they keep the humidity and oxygen level really high for the roots of the plants. They are also great in the bottom of pots of soil for drainage.

Yeah, I get free stuff. A lot of times, you can just write the company and they will send you a sample. Other times, you have to show them that you do product reviews.

Also, the waterfarm goes “gurgle, gurgle, slurp” because it lets solution out, then air out of the pumping colum.

Not that it makes a lot of difference. If you were using something sterile like Hydroton or Perlite/Vermiculite, it’d be fully on the hydroponic side of the fence.

Just make sure you don’t burn your plants – don’t use more nutes than you would watering a normal soil-grown plant.

In Red’s case here there just isn’t enough algae to be a problem, though theoretically it would be better if there weren’t any. How to do that effectively would be difficult to say. Maybe if you ran some beneficial microbes as well?

Not sure that’d be cost-effective for starting seedlings, since once you’ve got them started and moved into a regular system the algae will be starved of light and likely die off.

  264. So I finally tried this one out. I had a few differences in my methods and result.

First, being that the taste got the lowest score, when boiling my lentils I put in bit of beef soup base with it. Kinda goes against the non-meat aspect, but hey.

I don’t think mine came out of the boiling process as well as yours look and sound to have. I think maybe I let _too_ much of the moisture go away. At least with manual implements they didn’t all want to mash together. Still mostly in their own ball shapes, they at least clung together with a good rice consistency.

Not having so much red pepper or onion to work with, and feeling that the egg wasn’t enough on its own for having things stick together, I used a bit of salsa in the mix, which seemed to work well.

Using a round shape found in the kitchen to form patties, I got 3 fairly big ones. They held form pretty well going into the pan, but lost some of the shape while being flipped, and extremities wanted to fall off while being put on the bun.

Holding the finished burger at a wrong angle was inviting other bits to jump off as well, but what went into my mouth worked pretty well. What didn’t I put away for use in the near future; I’m thinking maybe something where meat is usually looser or completely encased in something might make a good use for it.

Also of note, our usually anti-vegetable cats were tricked enough to try a bit of this without complaining.

My only concern with the coconut and wick planter is root strength. They can be utterly root bound and still mature, but if they fall over, it can be horrible for pollination or staying watered.

This is ‘macro-swill’, and should be somewhat tasty and near 4.5-5.5% alcohol. Period. Nothing fancy. 64 calories and 3% is great for Utah and sorority girls, but from a company that sells ‘The High Life’? Not so much.

I think Miller will bring back original MGD Lite alongside the newly introduced MDG 64 and everyone will be 2x happier than before!
To the MGD 64, my opinion is that it is a really great beer for what it is, a 64 calorie xxxlite beer. After a few occasions drinking this beer, my pallet has adapted to really like it. As for the fact that the alchol content is ~2.8, a direct result of lower calories… guess what, I get to drink more, still have a good ‘buzz’ but still in control and little to no hangover the next day! I really loved the comments here. Before I went “low-carb” to lose some weight, I was drinking Budweiser and foreign beers (a whopping SIXTEEN grabs of carbs per can, up to 30 or more). After rediscovering Miller Lite, I found 3.2 grams of carbs a godsend, and 95 calories. When I got “obsessed”, I went for 2.6 grams of carbs, and realized anything under 3 grams was not beer anymore, but watery faux ‘near beer’ with significantly less alcohol. What is the point? I lost a ton of weight, and I honestly don’t think a few 3.2 gram beers instead of 2.6 or lower near-beers will make any noticeable difference to my already slim waist. The bigger picture was stopping those TWENTY gram per pop ales. For God’s sake, there has to be a line not worth crossing when it’s not even beer anymore! It’s still good ol’ Miller Lite for me.

Flora Nova is a 1-part nutrient with pH buffers that works wonders in almost all hydroponic systems. You can get it at any hydroponic shop.

If you are restricted to the hardware store, 1 tsp. of Peter’s dry fertilizer or (God forbid!) Miracle grow, half a lemon of juice, and 1/4 tsp. of epsom salts per gallon of water is the Home Depot method of hydroponic nutrients.

The fish air pump blows air into the tube pushing the nutrient solution upwards and aerating it. It goes through the drip ring and hydroton back into the bottom reservoir.

I bought amaryllis bulbs late last year. They grew 3 foot long leaves, but never bloomed.

The longer day length going into spring makes the plant think that it doesn’t have to reproduce to survive. That’s probably why they are sold before Christmas.

  463. Hey EH,

The reason there are coir specific nutrients is that coir sucks up calcium and magnesium. The addition of compost/castings doesn’t allow the coir to lock up those chemicals. It’s a great straight up potting soil replacement. As far as feeding, any fertilizer should work. I recommend Flora Nova:

I have enough waste nutrient solution that it never gets stale. Aeration just prevents anaerobic bacteria.

Another passive but effective system without aeration is aquaculture.

  544. Dan- DWC is the fastest and most efficient method if you can monitor the pH and ppm’s. Sadly, it is also the quick to fail if you don’t keep on those 2 things.

    Ultra is 4.2% @ 95 calories. Ultra Amber is 5% @ 114 calories, ideal but a meal.

Theres really no miracle go-between. Miller lite is the best Miller selection with 4.2% alc. @ 114 calories, but ultra amber delivers the flavor and alc% Miller cannot.

This beer is good, light cherry taste in the finish, wheat and hops at first sip. Smooth mouth feel, as a fan of head this beer stands up at first, but it goes away fast. Having my own home brew to compare this too, I would say overall a solid 8. Also worth trying, Raspberry UFO. However, I have only found this in a sampler pack of 6 different beers.

  633. I have been using alfalfa pellets straight from the feed store for a few years now. They take a little longer to break down than alfalfa meal though an old blender or food processor should be able to take care of that.

Alfalfa meal also a pretty decent balanced fertilizer in itself (7-3-4) I add a few cups to my garden a couple weeks before I plant my garden, and then use it as a side dressing to my summer crops (tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers) I also apply it to my lawn couple times a year, doesn’t give the immediate results of synthetic but it is the growth below the ground I am more interested in.
I should look into some of your additional amendments though.

  707. Hey Dennis,

The Great White won’t totally dissolve, but the mycorrizae will totally propagate once they are in there and exposed to nutrients and oxygen. I wouldn’t worry about a little sediment. Nothing is being wasted as long as you aren’t killing it with chlorine, chloramine, or stagnant water.

I have a plant myself, but it looks quite sad. Its currently growing in soil, but I want to move it to a simple hydro-setup. Could you give me some pointers to what the reason could be if the leaves are starting to loose color (turn yellowish) from the outside, and it once in a while drop a leaf? I have had it for about 1 year+, but it hasnt gotten more than 5-6 leaves. Please contact me on my email. And I am totally new to hydro. Do you think a ph of 5 is sufficient for hydro? And deep water culture, good or bad techniquie to start with?

  727. Hey Dan,

I forgot to include all of the romaine lettuce, arugula and komatsuna I have pulled out. It only takes about 600 watts of high pressure sodium and about 100 watts of fluorescent T5’s. That’s much less power than today’s gaming computer daily.

The watermelon plant is looking great. So many flowers and not a dying leaf on the plant.
