Here is my Aerogarden planted without expensive seed kits. I had previously written about it here.
Essentially, rockwool or Oasis is crammed into the seed pod hole and the seeds are set on top without sprouting domes. I am using 5 ml of Flora Nova nutrients per gallon of distilled water. It works great!
From left to right, the plants are are Toy Choi, Romaine lettuce, purple passion plant, Romaine lettuce, stevia, lemon balm, and chives. The white squares are Panda film, which are black on one side and white on the other, to protect the medium from algae.
I am thinking about swapping out the purple passion plant for sweet basil in the Aerogarden for a bit more utility around the kitchen. The Aerogarden has been a fun little toy.

That’s a pretty cool idea. I was wondering how people dealt with those expensive kits once they made their initial purchase.
so.. you can reuse the PODS or did you actually made new ones?
You can reuse the pods, but I just crammed the hunk of Oasis or rockwool in the hole.
Thank you for posting about the Aerogarden! I bought one but have yet to set it up, I appreciate the pointers. Sorry your stuff froze, hopefully your re-start will go well.
I use the open-cell foam the hardware store sells as Air Conditioner insulation instead of rockwool, and have been experimenting with fabricating different labels for the top of the pods. Your Panda film looks great! Where does one get that stuff? Also, I hope it is OK that I blogged about you
Its cool to see someone else growing purple passion vine even though you are considering discarding it! Aeroponic cloning is quite a bit more efficient than other systems I’ve tried. One of the reasons to use Neoprene discs with Aero cloners is to avoid the extra moisture from the medium. It also allows the plant to get more oxygen. Oasis cubes and rockwool can become victim to white moldy stuff.
