Bhut Jolokia in Recirculating Coco under LED

Here is a bhut jolokia under a 6-band HO LED light.  Notice the nice tight node length. Recirculating coco is almost too easy.  Mix half-strength nutrients, add a little humus and water twice a day for 15 minutes.  Don’t worry about overwatering.  Change the res when the nutrient solution gets too low. Coco naturally has [...]

I Am A Cat. I Will Destroy You and Your Garden, too.

Topsy Turvy Update

The Topsy Turvy pepper planter is coming right along.  I feel bad that it isn’t dripping with peppers yet, but it isn’t in full sun because I don’t feel like watering it every day. This Mandevilla lives right below the Topsy Turvy and just started vining on the trellises.

Hydroponic Orchid

Here is a Homus Depotus orchid growing in higromite.  It was in pretty bad shape when I got it, so it is nice to see it thrive.

The Backyard Jungle

The compost pepper and tomato are coming right along.  I can pull them and look at a solid block of roots.  That also means I have to water them every day in the hot streak that we have been having. The organic garden is doing well.  I haven’t even really needed to water it .  [...]

Bhut Jolokia Bonchi

I have previously written on the GH blog about Bonchi, or bonsai chile peppers.  I saw this shape of a chile pepper plant in a dream.  It took me a year of training this Bhut Jolokia plant, but it is almost complete.

Growing Plants With Coco Coir

Coco coir is a great renewable plant growing medium made from coconut husks.  With a few easy steps, it can give great yields to any hydroponic garden. 1. Flush, flush flush Coir is typically derived from ocean coastal regions.  This means that processed coir has a high salt content that isn’t beneficial to growing plants.  [...]

Addicted to Bokashi!

Anyone that has engaged me in talking about gardening knows that I love composting.  Composting is breaking down food with lots of beneficial bacteria and oxygen.  Bokashi is pickling food scraps anaerobically without oxygen, but can also consume meat and dairy unlike normal compost. Bokashi is great for urban composting.  All food scraps are placed [...]

Disaster in the Garden!

It has been really hot here in the Midwest, so I was glad to see that we had rain the forecast.  After the rain, I go outside to find my huge tomato plant had collapsed on itself and broke the cage. Going out to the fence where my grapes are, I found my cabernet vine [...]

This Year’s Poppies

My choice for poppies this year was Lauren’s Grape.  They are a miniature variety with soft purple blooms. They have a short stature and finish at about a foot and a half.  My only complaint is that the blooms only last about a day and a half.  These were interesting this year, but I don’t [...]
